Cat Vomit

The only thing that sucks about having cats is that as they get older they get health problems! My cats are the only ones I've ever owned so I have never had to deal with cat issues before. When I first got the cats I was hoping that by the time they got older I would have plenty of money to pay for all their vet bills. Sadly I am making even less money now than I was 10 years ago when I got my first cat, and of course my bills have doubled. Anyway, Starla had been vomiting a lot and right before I was going to take her to the vet I found out my boyfriend had been giving her milk from his cereal every day. She didn't vomit for a week after he stopped giving her the milk. Before that I had switched foods and she was fine for a few weeks. Anyway, she's now vomiting every day again - multiple times a day:( I finally took her to the vet and her blood work and other tests all came back fine - she's perfectly healthy - just like Pucci was when I took him to the vet for his health issue (which I have since fixed). It's like when I go to the doctor and I have 50 things wrong with me, but I'm "fine." I am going to try yet another food tonight - Duck and Pea cat food, which is free of all possible food allergy culprits. If that doesn't work, I guess it's time for x-rays and a sonogram of her stomach. I doubt they will find anything. The only way to tell if she has Irritable Bowel Syndrome is with a biopsy, which is an actual surgery. UGH. I never got my thyroid biopsy cause I couldn't afford it, but I'm more inclined to get it for my cat than for me. I want to rip out all of my carpet and install cement or tile floors, but that's against the HOA, and if someone ever moves in downstairs I'm sure they will notice.

I'm having my heart palpitations every second of the day, and before I thought it was from the Zyrtec or the other medication I'm on, but now I'm back to thinking/knowing it's solely anxiety. Every second of the day is spent worrying about cat vomit and not having any money, and the rest is spent on my trying to make money, and wondering what I should do to make the max amount of money. At least it's a welcomed break from worrying about my hair falling out! I've been getting horrible headaches the last few days. I don't know if it's stress or if it's my eyes. I'm debating if I should get my eyes checked, but then that's $ for the exam,  new contacts, and new glasses, which will be about $250+ total. UGH. I have 5 sets of contacts left, so I was hoping I could put it off a few months.

Finally, I splurged on a $3 ringtone. I've finally joined the 90s (or 2000s - whenever ringtones came out). I'm sure I could have gotten the ringtone free but I don't know how to do it. Anyway, my ringtone is "Everything She Wants" by Wham! I know no one even has ringtones anymore, but the tones that came with my phone suck, so I needed to get something. Otherwise I like my new free phone! The guy at the store said I will get charged if I use Facebook/Email, so even though it's set up for it, I can't use it for free.

They can! Because I'm on the top floor I have to have carpeting in the living room and bedrooms. The rest can be tile, etc. I don't think I could even have tile with rugs on it. If someone downstairs complains, I'm not sure if the HOA people have the right to look at your condo, but they probably do, and then they'd make you change your flooring. If you have a downstairs unit you can have whatever flooring you want. In the last condo I rented, there was tile in the living room, but they also had a rule that the bedrooms had to be carpeted. The bottom line is if you don't want carpet, don't live in an upstairs condo.

My cats have bouts of vomiting every couple weeks, sometimes. I usually just switch their food and it stops for awhile, then I switch it again, and again. I just keep a bunch of different foods around so I can switch like that.

Also Cookie Puss has Inflamatory Bowel Disease and the vets I went to in L.A. wouldn't treat him without knowing exactly what he had, which can only be determined by a biopsy and/or that thing where they stick the camera up ionto their tummies. They had already done the ultrasound and the needle bipsy which of course, came back with no good results and were ridiculously expensive. It seemed too invasive and too expensive to do the other thing so I brought him to Colorado to see a specialist here. He is an excellent vet and when I asked if we could just go ahead and treat for the easiest thing (IBD) he said yes, so we put Cookie on prednisolone, which has been working for the past 4 years. It's not expensive at all and he is easy to pill. Most vets are jerks so if you can find one who will work with you and be reasonable, you should switch.

YeaH I am in the process of trying different foods right now. I was all excited about the Duck and Pea food, but Starla won't eat it! My other cats think it's fine. Ugh. I've already tried to give her Pepcid AC pills that the vet gave me, and so far I haven't been successful at all. I try putting them in the back of her mouth, and putting them in a pill pocket treat, but it didn't work.

If I can't solve her vomiting with food, I will probably get the x-ray, and if they don't see anything I was going to ask if I could treat it as IBD just to see what happened. I just have to figure out a way to get the pills down her throat. I went to a new vet that gets really good recommendations online. They seem fine, but it's like going to a regular doctor, where you spend a bunch of money and still don't know what's wrong with you. I'm sorry Cookie Puss has IBD:(

You may recall that I lost one of my cats last year and had to make the heart-wrenching decision to put him down after having him at the vet for a week.

When it comes to our pets (just as with our loved people) we have to ask ourselves if what we are doing for them is for THEM or us. You can spend thousands of dollars chasing down what may or may not be wrong with them and never find a thing, only to continue dealing with a sick kitty. In our case finding out what it was probably cost less than keeping him alive for the next week only to end up having to let him go.

I know it's not much help, but I can't help but question - even if you do find out something is wrong in his stomach or with his thyroid will treating it make his quality of life (and yours) better or worse?

You've got your own health issues to deal with as well as limited funds to consider.

In my case, my cat right now is totally fine - she acts normal and the only difference is that she throws up a lot. Her personality is the same and she doesn't appear to be in any pain, except the 10 seconds before she vomits. Apparently some cats vomit every day and it's no big deal, but then it could be something bad. And she's not that old yet. Unless her problem is cancer, I think it's something that can be fixed - I just have to figure out how to do it, without spending a lot of money.

PJ has always been a puker. Even before he got the renal failure.

Cookie Puss is good with pills. He's not smart. He doesn't even realize what's happening until its over.

They make pill dispensers: http://www.petfooddirect.com/product/2250/Four-Paws-Pill-Dispenser-for-Pets?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cse

You just straddle the cat from behind, open her mouth, shoot it in, close her mouth and rub her throat/neck till she swallows.

But like I said, that doesn't work on some cats. Luckily, if Starla needs prednisolone, they make it in an ear gel that you can just rub on the inside of her ear. It's not cheap, tho. It's like $24 for 30 doses, where the pills are like $15 for 100 doses.

I'll try the pill shooter, but I haven't bought it yet cause I already assume it won't work, but maybe it will. That's good to know Prednisone comes in a gel. The next time I need a cat sitter, it will be a nightmare if she is supposed to do extra stuff besides just feed them.

Hopefully, it's nothing. I kept reading the same when DOG was doing it off and on for a year or so.

Pj is impossible to pill. I gave him one last week and thought he took it fine but then yesterday I found it in my bed. Wtf PJ!
